One of the best features is our boat wall located in the main lobby corridor. We have seven models of some of the most famous and interesting boats ever to travel across Lake Superior and the Great Lakes.

The James H. Shrigley is a propeller ship built in 1881 out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was 171 ½ feet long with a wood hull. In August 1920, she foundered off Braddock Point in Lake Ontario.

The steamer Walk-In-The-Water was a 135 foot, wood hulled ship built in Black Rock, New York. It was the first steamer built on the upper lakes and the first to ply the waters of Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. While seeking shelter, she became stranded on the shore near the Buffalo lighthouse on the night of November 1, 1821.

While going from Ashland, Wisconsin, to Sandusky, Ohio, with a load of iron ore, the 204 ½ foot long U.S.S. Niagara schooner broke from a tow line during one of Lake Superior’s gales and foundered three miles off shore. Nine lives were lost.

One of the oldest depicted boats on our wall is the Nancy, an 80 foot schooner built in 1789 in Detroit, Michigan. She was a fur trading vessel until taken over for transport during the War of 1812. She was burned by U.S. troops on the Nottawasaga River in August 1814.

Built in Ohio in 1938, the William A. Irvin is 593 feet long with a steel hull. In 1986 this ship became a floating museum in Duluth, Minnesota. During the summer, touring this mighty ship should be on your list of things to do in Duluth. It becomes the haunted ship during the month of October.

On November 10, 1975, the now famous Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior during one of the Lake’s infamous gales of November. The Fitzgerald is one of the longest models on display as it had a length of 711 feet.

Also on display is the T.L. Durocher, a tug built in 1930. The tug was lost on October 28, 1942, in the Kokfoal River in Quebec, Canada.

On Sunday, May 27, the 17th Annual Battle of the Jugbands will take place at the Amazing Grace Café in Canal Park. This event begins at 1 p.m. and is fun for the whole family.

College graduation is always a big event in any location but it is especially large in Duluth with the University of Minnesota Duluth and the College of St. Scholastica campuses residing here. Commencement is May 12 at the DECC AMSOIL Arena for College of St. Scholastica. On May 18, the University of Minnesota commencement will be split into two separate ceremonies. Multiple undergraduate ceremonies based on degree program will allow anyone to attend the UMD ceremonies instead of limiting attendance with tickets. Check with your grad for their correct time for commencement.
